Physicals Q&A

What are physicals?

Physicals, or physical exams, are routine checkups that primary care providers such as Dr. Olabintan perform to assess your overall health. You don’t need to be sick to schedule a physical. A physical can be done virtually via video with the patient's assistance.

During this virtual visit, Dr. Olabintan can use digital devices that you have (like digital watches or Fitbits that can detect your heart rate and/or heart rhythm) and home monitoring devices (weight scale, blood pressure cuff, and pulse oximeter) to help with your assessment.

The most common type of physical is the routine annual physical exam. During an annual physical, Dr. Olabintan’s goals are to:

  • Update your immunizations as needed
  • Screen you for early signs of disease
  • Make sure you’re managing any chronic conditions
  • Identify any health or lifestyle issues that could cause future complications

Annual physical exams are also a time for you to share with Dr. Olabintan and talk to her about any concerns you may have regarding your mental, emotional, or physical health. Remember that the more open you are with Dr. Olabintan, the better she can help you.

What types of physicals are available to me?

At Livingspring Family Medical Center, Dr. Olabintan also offers a wide variety of specialized physical exams in addition to annual exams, including:

DOT physicals

DOT (Department of Transportation) physicals are exams that commercial drivers must take every so often to ensure that they’re physically able to safely operate their vehicle on the road.

During a DOT physical, Dr. Olabintan evaluates your hearing, vision, blood pressure, respiratory health, physical attributes, and medical history.

Work and sports physicals

These types of physicals ensure that you’re physically and mentally prepared to take on the rigors of a sport or a job that requires manual labor.

During work and sports physicals, Dr. Olabintan first checks your heart rate and rhythm, vision, ears, nose, throat, and abdomen. Then she examines your flexibility, physical strength, posture, and joints.

Why are physicals important?

No matter how well you feel, you must schedule regular physical exams in order to stay healthy. Regular physicals give Dr. Olabintan the opportunity to catch diseases and other potential problems with your health while they’re still easier to treat or reverse.

This is particularly true of ailments that don’t necessarily cause symptoms until later on down the road, such as high blood pressure or Type 2 diabetes.

Physicals are also important because they help you develop a relationship with Dr. Olabintan and the rest of her team. The better Dr. Olabintan knows you, and the more comfortable you feel sharing details about your life with her, the better she can see the whole picture of your health.

Preventive care services like physicals help you be the healthiest version of yourself. To schedule a physical exam or to consult with Dr. Olabintan via telemedicine, reach out to Livingspring Family Medical Center online or over the phone today.
