As the year moves quickly forward, many people find themselves carrying more than they realize. Not just physical weight but mental, emotional, and spiritual burdens.
The real question isn’t whether you’re lifting something.
The real question is:
What are you lifting—and should you be carrying it?
Scripture reminds us in First Epistle to the Thessalonians 5:23 that our whole spirit, soul, and body matter. When one area becomes overloaded, the entire person feels heavy.

1. Your Body: Lift Wisely, Not Excessively

Strength doesn’t grow during constant exertion. The body needs recovery time to rebuild and strengthen.

2. Your Mind: Not Every Thought Deserves a Workout
Mental exhaustion often comes from replaying the same thoughts repeatedly.
People frequently carry mental weights such as:

* Comparison (“comparitis”)
* Past conversations
* Fear or self-doubt
Every time you replay those thoughts, you’re lifting them again.
But here’s a powerful reminder:
Not every thought deserves reps.
Some thoughts drain energy instead of strengthening you.

Ask yourself:
* What thoughts replay constantly in my mind?
* Are they helping me move forward?
* Or are they amplifying negativity?
The “soundtrack” playing in your mind influences your:
* Decisions
* Relationships
* Confidence
* Outlook on life
Replacing destructive thoughts with healthier ones can lighten a tremendous mental burden.
3. Your Emotions: Feel Them, But Don’t Let Them Rule You
Emotional weights can be some of the heaviest burdens people carry.
Examples include:
* Grief
* Bitterness
* Shame
* Guilt
* Unresolved pain
These emotions are real and valid—but they should not control your life.
A powerful example comes from Book of Psalms, where David often speaks directly to his own soul:
> “Why are you downcast, O my soul?”
He acknowledged his emotions but refused to let them dictate his destiny.

* Share grief instead of carrying it alone
* Seek support from trusted people
* Give yourself grace
* Speak truth to yourself when emotions feel overwhelming
Sometimes the most powerful encouragement comes from the pep talk you give yourself.
4. Your Will: You Don’t Have to Control Everything
Many people carry a heavy internal pressure to hold everything together.

* Caregivers
* Professionals responsible for others
But even Jesus Christ demonstrated surrender when He prayed:
“Not my will, but Yours be done.”
Some outcomes are simply outside our control.

But the final outcome of many situations belongs to God.
Releasing control can remove enormous emotional weight.
5. Your Spirit: Where True Strength Comes From
While the body, mind, and emotions matter, true strength begins in the spirit.

* Worship
* Obedience
* Community
These disciplines strengthen the inner life and help sustain us during difficult seasons.
Trials Are Training, Not Just Hardship
One uncomfortable but important truth is that challenges are often part of spiritual growth.
They are not always punishment.
Sometimes they are training.
Difficult seasons can build:
* Character
* Wisdom
* Emotional resilience
* Spiritual maturity
Growth requires capacity, and capacity is often built during pressure.
No one can build that capacity for you. Others can support you, but your growth journey is personal.
What You Were Never Meant to Carry

You were not designed to carry:

* Everyone’s approval
* Everyone’s happiness
* Everyone’s outcomes
You can influence people and situations but you cannot control everything.

Play your part faithfully and release the rest.

Healthy living requires learning what to hold—and what to release.
Focus on lifting what strengthens you:
For your body
* Exercise wisely
* Progress gradually
* Rest when needed
For your mind
* Monitor your thoughts
* Reject harmful mental patterns
For your emotions
* Feel honestly
* Seek support
* Practice self-forgiveness
For your spirit
* Spend time with God
* Draw strength from prayer and truth

Everyone carries weight in life.
