The Power of Prayer in Healing

The First Misunderstanding About Prayer and Healing

When people hear “prayer and healing,” there are immediate assumptions.

One of the biggest misconceptions is this:
“God did that in the Bible, but He doesn’t do that today.”

Another common belief:
“God heals in other countries—but not here.”

Melanie shared that no matter where she ministers—Colombia, Brazil, the United States—people believe healing happens somewhere else. Each culture assumes it lacks something another culture has.

But the issue is not geography.

The issue is often mindset.

We are not waiting on God to decide to heal. Many times, God is waiting on us to walk in obedience to what He has already instructed.

Why We Don’t See More Healing

According to Melanie, two primary factors limit what we experience:

1. Mindset

Many believers quietly think:

  • I am not holy enough.

  • I do not know enough.

  • I am not qualified.

  • I do not have “that anointing.”

  • That gift is for someone else.

But healing does not flow from personal perfection. It flows from the authority of Jesus and the grace of God.

Healing is not about being impressive. It is about being available.

2. How We Pray

There are different types of prayer. Petitioning—asking God for something—is valid. But when it comes to healing, Scripture repeatedly shows believers commanding healing in Jesus’ name.

Instead of pleading, believers are instructed to speak with authority rooted in Christ.

That shift alone changes everything.

Healing Is Not an Event. It Is a Lifestyle.

Melanie emphasized that healing ministry is not a special service on a calendar. It is not limited to conferences or crusades.

It is a lifestyle for every believer.

She shared how, at a women’s retreat in Oregon—where she was not even the speaker—she casually offered to pray for a woman with shoulder pain from surgery. After prayer, the woman lifted her arm and felt a pop. The pain disappeared completely.

Then came knees.
Then thumbs.
Then necks.
Then backs.
Then feet.

Multiple women were healed in what began as an ordinary hallway moment.

Not because of a stage.
Not because of a spotlight.
But because someone chose to act in love and obedience.

Healing, she explained, is one way God displays His goodness so others can encounter His love.

What Qualifies Someone to Pray Like That?

This is where the conversation became foundational.

The authority to pray in Jesus’ name comes from relationship.

We do not automatically have relationship with God. Sin separates humanity from Him. We cannot fix that separation by trying harder or being better.

Jesus came, lived without sin, died to pay for our wrongdoing, and rose again so we could have restored relationship with God.

When someone chooses to surrender, asking forgiveness and making Jesus Lord of their life, they are no longer separated. They are connected. They now carry His Spirit within them.

And from that place of relationship comes authority.

It is not about using Jesus’ name like a formula. It is about communion with Him.

What If Healing Doesn’t Happen Immediately?

Not every prayer results in instant visible change.

Melanie addressed this honestly.

After praying, she encourages people to test it. Move the joint. Try what you could not do before. Check the pain level.

Sometimes pain drops from a ten to a five. That is progress. Pray again.

Sometimes healing unfolds in stages. Sometimes it stabilizes and continues improving over days or weeks.

Faith is not shaken by process.

The key is persistence and gratitude for movement, not discouragement at partial progress.

Mindsets That Must Be Debunked

Several harmful beliefs stop people from stepping out:

  • “I need more education.”

  • “I am not spiritual enough.”

  • “I have my own health issues, so I cannot pray for someone else.”

  • “That is not my gift.”

Melanie shared that she has prayed for conditions she personally struggles with—and seen others healed while she herself continues walking through her own healing journey.

Healing flows from God’s grace, not from personal flawlessness.

We are conduits, not the source.

Salvation: The Starting Point

At the heart of this conversation was relationship with Jesus.

For anyone seeking that relationship, it begins simply:

  • Acknowledge wrongdoing.

  • Ask for forgiveness.

  • Place trust in what Jesus accomplished on the cross.

  • Make Him Lord.

  • Choose to follow Him.

That decision opens the door to restored communion and access to the Kingdom life Jesus offers.

Final Thoughts

Prayer is not passive.
Healing is not outdated.
Authority is not reserved for a select few.

When believers shift their mindset and align their prayer with what Scripture models, healing becomes less mysterious and more normal.

This conversation was not about hype. It was about obedience. It was about love. It was about partnership with God.

And perhaps most importantly, it was about remembering that the same Jesus who healed then is still healing now.

Then share it. Someone else may need this reminder today.
