A Conversation with Dr. Gloria on the Power of Asking
“You do not receive because you do not ask.”
That truth alone set the tone for a powerful, eye-opening conversation between Dr. Tolulope Olabintan and her guest, Dr. Gloria, physician, negotiation coach, speaker, and self-proclaimed asking queen.
This wasn’t a conversation about entitlement.
It was a conversation about clarity, courage, and capacity.
According to Dr. Gloria, most people don’t struggle with asking, they struggle with hearing no.
Fear of rejection.
Fear of appearing demanding.
Fear of being seen as “too much.”
But the real question she challenged us with was simple and piercing:
Are you truly content where you are?
If you are, then don’t complain.
But if you’re not, asking isn’t optional; it’s the bridge to the next level.
One of the most liberating ideas shared was this:
Go get as many “no’s” as possible.
Why?
Because no’s build resilience.
No’s sharpen strategy.
No’s force creativity.
The more no’s you hear, the better you get at anticipating objections and refining your ask.
Not every ask fails because it’s unreasonable.
Some fail because it’s directed at the wrong person, at the wrong time, in the wrong way.
Dr. Gloria introduced the idea of power mapping:
Who has influence?
Who should you ask first?
When is the right moment?
Sometimes the key isn’t the CEO, it’s the person who knows how things really work behind the scenes.
One of the most striking moments came when Dr. Gloria said plainly:
“You are not the sacrificial lamb for happiness.
Jesus already died. You don’t have to.”
For many women especially Christian women suffering in silence has been confused with virtue.
But loving others does not mean neglecting yourself.
Jesus modeled sacrifice not self-erasure.
Faith doesn’t cancel strategy.
Prayer doesn’t replace action.
Dr. Gloria grounded her confidence in this truth:
Even when an ask doesn’t result in a yes, God is still at work.
That assurance removes desperation and replaces it with peace.
Asking is not about taking without giving. It’s about mutual value.
Dr. Gloria emphasized that successful asks are sustained by contribution:
Show up fully.
Add value.
Be dependable.
Be excellent.
When people see your value, saying yes becomes easier.
Asking isn’t manipulation.
It’s communication.
It’s how needs are met.
It’s how burnout is prevented.
It’s how capacity expands.
So ask your spouse for help.
Ask your boss for clarity.
Ask for support.
Ask for rest.
Ask God boldly.
Because silence has a cost and asking just might change everything.
